The Female Torso

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Well our last assignment at the Academy was to draw the female torso. Do you know how intimidating that is? For a person who has never drawn before, this is very intimidating. It’s amazing what you can do though when you learn step-by-step on the rules and fundamentals of drawing. You can check out the rest of my charcoal drawings in my sketches portoflio!

Fabric by Charcoal

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

My last homework assignment for my foundation course, Analysis of Form, was to basically hang a piece of fabric on the wall and draw it with charcoal. I’ve never considered myself the greatest of drawers, but with this foundation course it is teaching me to look at objects and see the simple shape within and then apply the knowledge that we have learned from lighting and effectively shade it and render it out. Of course, when I first started this homework’s reading material, I was intimidated very quickly.

It’s quite hard to see the simple shapes within a hanging piece of fabric. It is also quite hard to see how you can possibly make something look like what you see in real life when you’ve never really been into drawing that much. It’s crazy to think that I actually finished this homework.

I haven’t submitted this for grading to my professor just yet because I am waiting for a critique on it from my workshop instructor so I can get things right before the final grade is given to it. I know there’s room for large improvement and I know this isn’t perfect. It’s still a good feeling knowing that I did this all by myself with the instruction and direction from the Academy. :)

Winter Lamp Speed Painting

Winter Lamp Speed Painting

I had the urge to paint something tonight, but I didn’t want to make something that was going to take more than a night to complete, so I decided to do a speed painting.

Wikipedia.org says:

Speed Painting is an exercise, primarily digital, in which one paints on a time budget, using already developed methods to create a piece. Speed Painting is a widely used term in the Entertainment industry, often amongst Concept Artists.

With that said, here is my concept. Don’t ask why I painted a modern lamp in the middle of no where, but that’s what I saw in my head. I tried to make this as detailed as possible in a 30 minute time frame. Hopefully as I do more of these I can start to get more details in with better colors. I only used 7 colors in this. I think I should have used more, but this is the outcome of 30 minutes.

Susan Pevensie Painting

This is my first digital painting. I wanted to learn how to do paintings digitally so I went ahead and took on the task of painting Susan Pevensie (Anna Popplewell) from the Chronicles of Narnia. I’m not 100% satisfied with this piece, but overall I like how it turned out.

I had the hardest time trying to paint her hair. I wanted to go for realistic, but in the end I had to just go with simple color blocks to show the highlights and shadows. Maybe some day I can learn how to paint hair realistically.

The chain maille was also another very hard part to get put on the canvas. I ended up in the end just painting some metal-like rings and using the transform tool to warp them around until I got something I liked. They still look a bit off, but that was as good as I could get it.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with this. As I said earlier, this is my first digital painting. I wasn’t expecting to achieve such a great looking end result, but I did. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should paint next? ;)

Thanks for taking the time to read through this — If you have any questions or suggestions about the finished painting, you can leave a comment to this blog post and I will respond as soon as possible! :)
