Panasonic Toughbook S9 Review

Panasonic Toughbook S9

World’s lightest 12.1 inch laptop is here! The Panasonic Toughbook S9 has claimed to be the lightest 12 inch laptop (with DVD drive) in the world and its researchers have proved it right. The sturdy S9 offers an exceptional durability with high performance and an endurance to bear all kinds of beatings. With an 11 hour battery backup, is the best option for professionals who are always on move.

Design and Performance

At first when you look at the Panasonic Toughbook S9, it appears to be bulky; but the 8.3” x 11.1” x 0.9”/1.5” laptop with a weight of approximately 3 pounds, is the lightest laptop in the 12-inch category. The case of the S9 is made of tough magnesium alloy and also features a shock mounted flex-connect hard drive, which can bear rugged environments and can also withstand a fall of almost 2.5 feet. The MIL-STD-810G drop procedure in the S9 too allows it to endure falls from any angle. The keyboard and touch pad are also designed to resist spills, bumps and knocks.

The Toughbook S9 has got a 12.1-inch, widescreen LED display with an anti-glare coating and a resolution of 1280×800. The anti-glare coating is very efficient for outdoor usage, another plus point for mobile professionals who have to work in bright lights. The S9 is also the first laptop in the Toughbook series to feature a HDMI video output, a welcome addition.

The USP of the S9 can be, it’s claimed, 11 hour long battery backup, which is one of the longest offered in laptops currently. This feature alone is enough to sell the S9 as hot cakes. The machine also features a combination of fingerprint sensor and TPM security chip, for protecting sensitive data. The laptop has a PC Card slot, but it would have better to have the latest ExpressCard standard. Also, the price of the S9 is bit on the higher side.

Dell Inspiron M101z

Dell Inspiron M101z

In recent times, there has been a huge influx of 11.6 inch laptops, which are neither Netbooks nor standard laptops. The Dell Inspiron M101z is one such laptop and the problem is that no one knows what to call these mid-sized laptops. Nonetheless, the M101z is a power packed laptop with AMD’s new processor, the dual-core Athlon Noe II, a 320GB 7,200rpm hard drive and 4GB of RAM. The M101z also has another version, the AMD Neo K125 which comes with a lower price.

The dual core version in the M101z works like magic with some amazing features and excellent speed. But it is almost as costly as a standard laptop and by paying slightly more you can get an Intel Core i3 system. It has got a brilliant design and build-quality and is perfect for someone who wants a performance oriented machine in a small size.

Design and Performance

In design part, the Inspiron M101z definitely leaves a mark. The design is smart, with a black screen bezel and dark grey body, complementing each other perfectly. The M101z also comes with four attractive colors- black, blue, red and the very eye-catching pink. Dell is going charitable with the M101z, with a part of the total cost of the pink colored laptop going to Susan Komen’s breast cancer organization.

The keyboard of the M101z is quite solid and sturdy with flat-topped and widely spaced keys. The user-friendly design of the keyboard allows quick and comfortable typing. Dell has also worked on the touch pad, which is significantly improved. The mouse buttons are separate and fairly sized. The touch pad also consists of fundamental multitouch gestures, like two finger scroll with a friction free surface. The laptop has an 11.6 inch display screen with a resolution of 1366×768 and also features a 1.3 webcam and microphone. The company has placed the display screen on the top of keyboard to bring the screen closer. But this hinged design restricts the screen to be tilted only to 120 degree.

The performance of Inspiron M101z, with its new AMD processor, is impeccable. It is not as fast as the standard i-series laptops; however, it is far better than the other 11-inch laptops of recent times. The graphics are amazing thanks to the AMD chipset.

The battery life of the M101z is decent, with the 56Wh six-cell battery lasting for approximately 3 hours 30 minutes in a video test and about 4 hours 30 minutes in a normal audio and web surfing test. The speakers are excellent, delivering high volumes with great quality.

MSI Big Bang Fuzion Motherboard

MSI Big Bang Fuzion Motherboard

Overview

MSI has launched a very good series of high-end motherboards in the past. Fuzion Series is the most popular motherboard MSI has launched, that uses the much discussed and debated Lucid Hydra Chip-200. This super-high end motherboard targets gamers and enthusiasts. This latest Big Band Fuzion series offers loads of interesting features along with the popular Lucid Hydra technology and cross vendor multiple GPU support.

Features

Fuzion motherboard uses Inter P55 chipset which supports Intel CPU’s such as Core i7, Core i5 and Core i3; that come in along with the LGA 1156 socket. This chipset offers 12 USB 2.2 ports, 6 SATA 3 Gb/s ports and it supports up to 16 GB of DDR3 memory. Apart from this, there are two additional SATA 3 Gb/s pairs, supported by the JMicron JMP322 controller for each port. Nowadays, SATA 6 Gb/s and USB 3.0 ports are equipped with many high end mainstream motherboards and latest chipsets and it is a rising trend; MSI could have added support for it. But their absence in the Big Band Fuzion series is a big surprise.

The rear panel of the motherboard is quite sophisticated as there are Fire Wire ports, PS/2 ports, Ethernet Dual Gigabyte ports, 10 USB ports (including 2 ports for eSATA/USB) and OC Dashboard connectors which are a bundled overlocking device. It serves two main functions. First, it displays or shows the initialization of the status of subsystems carried out during POST that helps in hardware fault diagnosis or inappropriate functionalities due to BIOS settings. Separate user guides is provided, which gives detailed instructions and debug codes using the OD Dashboard. Secondly, one could overclock the memory and CPU and then tweak the chipset voltage, the memory voltage and the CPU voltage through the Windows. The values can be checked from the OLED screen of the device. Effective memory and CPU speeds can be checked by the use of CPU-Z. Four dip switches and a small array of connectors are present near the RAM slots. These connectors are specially designed to allow checking of voltages through the multi-meter. The dip switches on the motherboard boost the CPU voltage, CPU_VTT voltage, memory voltage and chipset voltage. It also increases the adjustments in the voltage range in the BIOS.

This motherboard is equipped with a utility called as MSI Control Center, which shows system information and helps the user to overlock it for various parameters by simply dragging the sliders. Three additional overclockings are present for gaming, cinema and cooling. This overclockings are made easy by providing the OC Genie which is an automatic overclocking mechanism. OC Genie comprises an OC Processor and a switch. Upon activating the switch, the OC Processor calculates the overclocked optimum voltages and speeds, and then it applies to the BIOS values. This OC Genie has overclocked the Intel Core i7-870 to 4.0 GHz from 2.93 GHz, without any issue. The complete package comes with a separate MSI user guide for overclocking, OC Genie and MSI control Center.

Review of Apple MacBook Air 11-inch

MacBook Air

We remember the very first Macbook Air laptop launch had been welcomed along with astonishment as well as complete wonder. It had been Apple’s tiny as well as slimmest laptop computer, the nearest point to a genuine ultraportable. There’s one simple way to figure up the new 11-inch MacBook Air: It’s constantly ready on the go. Not only does this notebook weighs a plain 2.3 pounds and possess a razor-thin outline, its use of flash memory means you’ll never have to wait to start surfing the internet, touching up photos, or making FaceTime calls.

Overview

The thickness and depth of the MacBook Air (11-inch)-11.8 through 7.7 inches-are the same as  Windows-based laptops such as the Asus UL20FT-A1 as well as Acer Aspire 1830T-3721, however exactly what Apple shaved away when it comes to width helps make the other two seem like giants. It’s difficult to evaluate exactly how dreadfully slim it’s before you get a hold on this, and set it against the slimmest thing you’ll find in the room.

The leading frame, which steps only 0.11 inch, is really slimmer compared to back of the device (0.68 inch). It is slimmer, certainly, compared to any kind of existing Netbook in the market. The 11-inch MacBook Air’s razor-thin body is delightedly proportional in order to how heavy it is, since it’s 2.3-pound body is definitely lighter in weight compared to Acer UL20FT-A1 (3.3 pounds), Acer 1830T-3721 (3 pounds), as well as Dell Inspiron M1010z (3.4 pounds).

Although Apple found a way to squeeze in two USB ports and a speedy solid-state drive (SSD), the MacBook Air is not closely as characteristic packed the remaining MacBook family, yet it would cost you a bit more. Still, it will give the latest batch of Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) laptops a run for their money.

Keyboard and Touchpad

A great ultraportable keyboard would make you overlook that you are utilizing a more compact laptop, and the 11-inch MaBook Air passes the test with soaring colors. As per usual with Macs, design consists of devoted keys to modifying the volume and brightness, playback functions, and each expose as well as Dashboard. It also has a power button in the higher right corner. The arrow keys are a bit small, but have no difficulty in usability. Lacking the backlit functionality, that’s the only drawback of the Mac.

Apple leverages its extra huge glass touchpad to full result on the 11-inch MacBook Air, which offers isolated precision and a soft navigation experience. It also incorporates well with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, permitting users to accomplish all types of multitouch signals. A pinch-to-zoom effort works well in iPhoto and Safari, and it was essential to minimize all open apps with a four-finger descending swipe. A thrice-handled filch allow to zip the images in iPhoto. Overall, this ultraportable offers an ergonomic experience.

FaceTime Camera

Thanks to the new FaceTime notebook application, MacBook users could make video calls to other Mac owners, as well as to those who have an iPhone 4 and the recent iPod touch. The system procedure was a bit of an ache, requiring a creation of a new account and confirming the e-mail address before usage. Then, we just gave a friend the e-mail address we used to sign up and he called us from his iPhone 4. Wow wasn’t that an experience.

Technical Specifications

Wireless AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi (based on IEEE 802.11n specification)4; Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) wireless technology

The Bottom Line

The MacBook Air which is 11 inch, ($1,199 immediate), Apple’s most recent admittance to the ultraportable room, is not any Netbook computer, despite the fact that it is the nearest to Apple’s tries to creating one. In some incidents they mentioned it as the solution to the increasing Netbook demand in computer marketplace, although priced 3 times more. It is noticeably thinner than the unique MacBook Air, with a screen twice smaller.

At first we thought the rather thick bezel around the screen would verify distracting–until we curved the 11-inch MacBook Air on. You won’t get a brighter, crisper, or more vibrant display on a notebook this class. Photo and video editors will find this 1366 x 768 panel easy on the eyes. Websites looked good as well. The Air’s wide screening angles allow you to share slideshows and videos with a couple of individuals.

If you like Apple products, then have you purchased the new iPhone 4S? Check out all of its new features such as its awesome camera, siri and iCloud.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 Review

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580

Overview

From the time when NVIDIA released its first Fermi video card, the GeForce GTX 480, code named GF100, consumers have been wondering when they would see a full-out version of it. Now the time has finally arrived, the successor to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480, GeForce GTX 580, is making its debut. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB, code named GF110, is the world’s fastest Direct X 11 GPU with an artistic design and screaming performance.

GTX 480 was never really challenged; it is a high-end graphic card, and GTX 580 just extends that lead in the single-GPU market to further bounds; it is a top-end graphic card.

It has high-end gaming performance and standards. To boost the performance, NVIDIA’s engineers took GF100 architecture and mainly optimized it for lower power consumption, better overall performance and greater efficiency all through the rendering pipeline. This revised GF100 architecture resulted in new GF110 architecture. This card is also the first in GeForce 500 series to use a totally enabled chip, which is based on the modified Fermi architecture, with all six 64-bit memory controllers active and all 16 stream multi-processors clusters.

So, you can see that the GTX 580 delivers on much of what it promises.

Closer Look at the Design

GTX 580 is relatively more power efficient, cooler and quieter than its predecessor GTX 480. There were no issues with the GTX 480 gaming performance, but issues with performance per Watt though. NVIDIA has reengineered the GTX 580 at the transistor level (there are 3 Billion transistors) for better performance per Watt GPU. GPU core functions at 772 MHz rather than the 700 MHz of the GTX 480 1.5GB, with the 512 stream processors (SM) ripping along at 1,544 MHz rather than 1,400 MHz. Moreover, all 512 CUDA cores are enabled and active on this new architecture, while in GTX 480 cards only 480 CUDA cores were enabled.

The GTX 580 Graphic Card, 26.7 cm in length, is quite good looking with the black colored monitor connectors. The card has two DVI port and one mini HDMI port. An interesting alteration to the GTX 580 circuitry is the inclusion of three small chips on the PCB, which is used for monitoring the power at the hardware level.

It uses a vapor-chamber technology heat plate to exploit heat transfer between the heatsink and the GPU. You can also see that the heatsink cools other components such as, memory chips and regulation circuitry. To offer the cooling of the GTX 580, the heatsink cover is somewhat lowered near the intake fan. The back of the card is very similar in appearance to its predecessor GTX480. There is a set of two SLI interconnections on the side, which provides a 3-way SLI support.

It has one 6-pin and one 8-pin power connectors, which are used for 250 Watts power supply to the card. The GDDR5 memory chips are manufactured by Samsung, and have the model number K4G20325FC-HC04 (1250 MHz) or K4G20325FC-HC03 (1500 MHz). NVIDIA uses a CHil CHL 8266 voltage regulator made in Thailand on their card. It offers extensive voltage monitoring and control options using I2C, therefore it is a best option for ‘Overclockers’.

GF110 graphic processor is made up on a 40nm process and uses approximately 3.0 billion transistors (200 million less than GF100). The above silver metal surface is not the actual GPU; it is a heat spreader of the GPU. The actual GPU is fitted under the heat spreader, whose size is 520 mm2. The GF110 core is equipped with 64 texture units, 16 Polymorph engines, 512 CUDA cores, 1544Mhz on the CUDA cores, 16 streaming multiprocessors (SM), four Graphics Processing Clusters and48 ROP units with higher clock speeds of 772Mhz on the fixed function units.

The GPU maintains the same six 64-bit GDDR5 memory controllers to facilitate high bandwidth access to the frame buffer. The GPU architecture is designed to facilitate more pervasive use of the GPU for solving parallel problems. All threads that access the same memory locations at runtime automatically run faster, due to availability of a global L2 cache and 48 KB of L1 cache per SM.

The Bottom Line

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580, the fastest single GPU card on planet, is what all hardcore gamer had been waiting for. You can play any game out there and defend its territory with impunity. NVIDIA’s 3DVision Surround and system technology needs to be seen to be believed for a 3D Surround experience.  There is a remarkable amount of efficient performance in the GTX 580. They have improved the fan noise, making it quietest card in the 3D load.

The card is blistering fast, particularly in newer DirectX 11 technology. There is no doubt that it is a better performing video card than the AMD’s Radeon HD 5870, but its real competition is going to be the Radeon HD 6900 series. However, I think that it will go head-to-head with the upcoming AMD series.

GeForce GTX580 is costly, but price doesn’t matter if you are an ultra-rich game enthusiasts. Only problem is a lack of Display Port connector, offering one mini HDMI port and two DIV ports instead. If we put this aside, NVIDIA has managed an impressive feat.

It is a very desirable and impressive graphics card; better on every aspect that consumers had issues with.

Novatech nTablet

Novatech nTablet

Novatech, a leading technology retailer from UK, entered the foray of tablet PCs recently with the launch of its first product, the nTablet. The tablet’s launch in late October has received much positive feedback from consumers and it seems to be gaining popularity steadily. It is even dubbed as ‘Uk’s first Windows touch screen tablet’, but whether it can turn out to be an iPad Killer, only time can tell.

Overview

In looks, the Novatech nTablet is very similar to the ViewSonic ViewPad. One might even find it hard to differentiate the tablets, if they are placed together with their brand tags removed. Both the tablets run dual operating systems, Android 1.6 and Windows 7. There is a lower priced version with just Android or no OS available as well. Having Windows 7 really boosts the productivity, since the tablet can run multitude of applications. But the touch sensitivity of the screen can be a problem with the OS’s on-screen keyboard.

Running a full OS Windows 7 on a tablet does have its limitations, since it is necessarily made for desktop application. Multi-tasking can tend to get sluggish. Also, the Android OS is an older 1.6 version which will limit functionality, as there is no Flash support and also the apps for new 2.1 version won’t work. The firm does plan to include Android 2.1 in the upgraded variant next year.

The look and feel of the tablet is quite positive but media playback can be an issue. The Intel GMA 3150 GPU is fine for playing 720p video, but trying to view 1080p videos can be sluggish and frustrating. Novatech plans to resolve this issue by upgrading the hardware with Intel’s Oak Trail family of processors in the coming year. The new processors are also said to be better at power saving and can hence increase battery life. Less power consumption will mean less heating. But heating doesn’t seem to be a problem with the nTablet as the fan is hardly audible.

Specifications

The tablet comes with a 10.1” screen which is surrounded by a glossy black bezel/border with the Novatech brand name clearly visible at the bottom. The right-side bezel has three buttons; power, home and enter. On the top, situated in the middle, is a 1.3 megapixels camera and there are LEDs showing power, connectivity and battery status on the right hand side. The rear side is brushed aluminum.

The 275 x 170 x 14mm tablet weighs just 725g and is designed in such a way that majority of the connectors and ports are situated on one edge of the system (left side). There are two USB ports, a mini D-SUB to DVI-I, micro-SD card reader, audio-out, microphone and a power port. On the other side, there is a SIM card slot for 3G connectivity and a reset button. There are also two cooling vents placed on both the edges for better heat management.

On the inside, the tablet gets its processing power from an Intel Atom N455 1.6 GHz CPU, which features Hyper-Threading technology to boost the single core processor’s power. Novatech nTablet comes with 1 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory and a 32GB Solid State Drive (SSD). It has a 10.1″ 1024 x 600 pixels capacitive multi-touch screen backed by the Intel GMA 3150 GPU, which can easily handle full screen video, Windows Aero and Flash content.  For wireless connectivity, it has integrated 801.2 b/g/n, 3G n and Bluetooth v2.1+EDR which facilitate connectivity almost everywhere.

It also has gravity censor (like the iPad’s) which detects and automatically adjusts the screen’s orientation. The nTablet has a 4200mAH battery which promises up to 5 hours of power.

The tablet is powered by Windows 7 operating system which also comes pre-installed with the Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Edition. And the BIOS of the tablet can be accessed using an external keyboard; albeit it has limited functionality.

The Bottom-line

The company Novatech, is well known for its great products and superb customer support. The tablet is also cheaper and bigger (screen size) than other tablets, especially the ones running Windows 7. Although Windows 7 can face performance lag on the Atom processor, the tablet may be a lot lucrative with the proposed new processor and newer versions of Android. All in all, a solid built, value-for-money tablet.

Review of Dell Inspiron Duo

Dell Inspiron Duo

Overview

Dell is stopping the Inspiron duo’s puzzling promotion videos and formally revolving its display for the world to see, finally! People will be unable to click an order button about the completely distinctive 10.1-inch tablet or Netbook Duo now days, although according to Dell, it will increase with respect to pre-order at some point rapidly and begin delivery the very first 7 days associated with December.

For prices, the bottom design will begin from $549 (£449), and can load up the dual-core Intel atom N550 processor chip, 2 GB memory, a Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator for graphics, 250GB of storage space, as well as Windows 7 Home Premium. Normally, we can deal with this having a bigger hard disk, as well as including which JBL-powered speaker clock.

Since people must have assumed, the Inspiron Duo appears like an ordinary Netbook through very far. It’s the gleaming cover — it will be obtainable in which “marlin” blue color plus “foggy night” dark as well as “fastback” red in color — and its plastic edges house the typical ports, such as 2 universal bus controller port and also a sound jack port. Underneath the cover, it has a pleasant sensation with Chiclet keyboard which appears very similar to the Dell Inspiron M101z along with a decent size touch pad along with 2 mouse control keys. Yes, this seems more of a run-of-the-mill Netbook computer, that’s before you check out its 10.1 inch, 1366×768 resolution, and capacitive touch screen as well as thrust it towards the back. Divide the display, padlock it into the place, thrust the cap down and now this is tablet computer.

The touch screen by itself has been very attentive to gentle faucets, however much more fascinating is the fact that this instantly commences Dell’s Duo Stage user interface layer in slate mode. The user interface, that packages many of the exact same social network functions since the one’s ability, is actually finger-friendly and offers use of Dell’s songs phase, video clip phase, picture phase, as well as guide phase programs. It will not help to make moving Windows 7 simpler by itself; however it provides an alternative solution with regard to press usage actions. Thinking of Drawbacks? The memory is not expandable, there is no optical drive, and the battery is also not removable. Dell’s Will Koch mentioned the battery life will be about 4 hours, based on a range of uses.

Although Windows 7 has touch abilities, but that does not mean it works easily as compare to an Apple iPad. You can use your fingers to control software intended for the superior precision of a mouse pointer, but it is not actually comfortable on a 10 inch screen. It is OK for internet surfing in easy mode, but you’ll often want to spin the screen and use the keyboard though. That’s why the easy alteration is so important.

The bottom line

Just as we had paid attention to, Dell is putting an end to the Inspiron Duo’s mystifying advertising videos and formally revolving its screen for the world to see.
